The foundation of VFC was laid by Jayaramdas Patel,
in 1951 when he started manufacturing
printed cartons in Vijay Art Printing
Press, Mumbai. His company, having very
modest equipment , soon become the leading
supplier of printed cartons and labels
to the pharmaceutical industry by dint
of his personal effort and perseverance
in consistently providing quality products
on time. His ethical dealing and adoption
of modern management practices, in the
infancy of post independence Indian industry,
brought him the goodwill and loyalty of
many discerning customers: Glaxo Laboratories,
Ciba, Hoechst, Pfizer, Cipla, Sarabhai
Chemicals. This legacy still continues.

In
1965, his nephew, Bharat Patel qualified
in printing business administration, London
College of printing, joined the company.
Over the years, the customer base was
diversified to include FMCG ( fast moving
consumer goods ) customers; Hindustan
Lever, Colgate, Godrej, Godfrey Phillips,
etc . To meet their requirement, the Heidelberg
cylinder letter presses and platen presses
were replaced by offset presses, automatic
die cutter and gluers.
To match this change
of technology and customer profile, the
name of the company was changed from Vijay
Art Printing Press to Vijay Flexible Containers,
the acronym of which is VFC. VFC soon
became the market leader in printed cartons
through its outstanding service, quality
consistency and innovation. It gained
the confidence of GCMMF, Cadbury, Nestle,
Kodak and Phillips, amongst others.
In 1973, the
flexible packaging business started in
the name of Rathika Pvt Ltd, at Vapi,
South Gujarat, for supplies to the soap
and detergent industry.

In
1988, Pranav Patel, the founder's grandson
and a mechanical engineering graduate
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT), USA, joined the business. Around
the same time, post economic liberalization,
a renaissance in the FMCG market was catalyzed
by the popularity and meteoric growth
of film based rotogravure printed flexible
packaging. The flexible packaging business
of VFC was instrumental in the success
of leading national brands; Lipton Taaza
tea, Britannia Marie Gold, Marico Parachute
oil, Pillsbury wheat flour and agricultural
products of Dupont and Syngenta.
During
the late eighties, both the printed carton
and flexible packaging plants were moved
from Mumbai and Vapi to a 25 acre site
in Baska, near Halol, Gujarat, where they
now stand . The operation of VFC and Rathika
have since merged in a common entity called
VFC Industries Ltd.
In
1995, a major expansion of the flexible
packaging business was undertaken and
in 1999, a thrust was made in the area
of heat shrink sleeve labels. New product
development for demanding flexible packaging
applications is our strength. |
